I wanted to figure out how to “scratch” Flash animation kinda like a DJ does on a record. While working in Flash, I would find myself scrubbing the timeline back and forth quickly while listening to music and thinking the movement I could get was usually pretty entertaining. It was like a live jerky performance of the animation, and lended itself well to a music video.
I built a special Flash file that loaded a piece of animation and gave you a slider under it. I screen recorded myself “scratching” that bit of animation to the music.
My friend Jamey had a music project at the time called Herva and wanted to work on a video together. I told him about my “scratching” concept and he gave the thumbs up and let me make whatever I wanted for the video.
There was a local personality in town named Albert who I wanted to collaborate with on the captain character. So I filmed his face and hands in front of a terrible blue screen in my apartment. I had to choke the levels so hard on that footage to get it to look halfway decent it ended up having to be black and white.
I also made the head of the giant squid out of orange play-doh and filmed that in front of a different, but also terrible blue screen.
It looks like I smooshed some blue paper into a drawer maybe…
